Myth of Yunnan

A VR RPG game based on the story of a famous tourist attraction Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, China. Players will enjoy a fantastic adventure with its scenery and story.

Background

BACKGROUND

Xishuangbanna, Yunnan: Xishuangbanna is the home of the Dai people, Yunnan, China. The region sits at a lower altitude than most of Yunnan, and borders closely on tropical climate. It is a sought after tourist destination for the beautiful scenery.. Here, New Year’s normally falls between the 14th and 16th of April. This is the hottest days in a year, symbolizing the entrance into the New Year.

The Water Festival: The New Year Festival here is more commonly called the “Water-Splashing Festival”, “The Water Festival”, which is from a story about fire. Once a Devil was residing together with the Dai people. He was always up to vicious schemes and the people all hated him but were powerless before his black magic. One day, during the sixth month, his seventh wife found out about his weakness and while the Devil was soundly sleeping she cut off his head with strands of his own hair. The severed head caught fire when it hit the ground, so the seven wives held  the head up high in the air to prevent it from ruining the vellage. Dai people then splashed water on the wives for 3 days. The fire was put out, but the seven wives died and became seven fairy maidens.

Intro Scene

Myth Of Yunnan-06.png

Boletus, a good old teenager who has never left Xishuangbanna in the last 17 years, loves his hometown a lot. Raised up by the village people, Boletus is a little naughty but lovable. No one knows about his parents, but he has grown up in the love of all people around him, especially the old village head Untie Matsu.

Boletus’s only very one disadvantage is his carelessness. He has just forgotten to put out the campfire after enjoying a delicious hotpot with wild mushrooms. The fire ignited the forest and broke the seal for the Burning Devil.

Level One

Myth Of Yunnan-07.png

Boletus encountered Auntie Matsu on the way home, but  Auntie Matsu was on fire. The river bizarrely ran out of water, so Boletus went to the top of he hill and  make use of the backup reservoir. Boletus managed the console for the reservoir and allowed the last bare water to flow into the river.

Boletus then picked a branch from the prashorea chinesis trees and poked Auntie Matsu into the river. Auntie Matsu then told Boletus about the coming of the Burning Devil who has ruined half of the village. Then Matsu turned a water gun to Boletus and asked him to use it as a weapon and defeat the Burning Devil.

Level Two

Myth Of Yunnan-08.png

Boletus trailed the fire to look for the Burning Devil. At the foot of the sacred mountain he met a young peacock who was on fire. There was no river around, so Boletus gathered up dew on top of the trees with his hotpot and use the water gun to put out the fire. The peacock was saved and told Boletus:

The Burning Devil is going to the dry sacred fountain on the sacred hill. You need . Take my tail quill and find the vestiges of the ancient seven fairy maidens to reactivate the fountain to put out the fire! ’ The way has been destroyed, so Boletus picked some boards of the bridge(ruined by the DM) to make a pair of wings.

Level Three

Myth Of Yunnan-09.png

Boletus found the Burning Devil right in the dry sacred fountain. He was pretentious, since he thought he is now invincible. Boletus slipped away and tried to find the vestige marks of the ancient seven fairy maidens.

Boletus used the peacock quill to redraw the marks of the seven maidens. Then water filled the fountain again and Boletus just used that water to put out the fire of the Burning Devil. Without fire, Burning Devil just reduced to ashes.

The first edition was made with Unity 3D, an FPS & RPG game. The FPS did nothing to the fun of this game and added a lot of work, so this part has been deserted in the new edition.

This is a game aims to tell a story, show the beautiful scene to players and  take them into an adventure, the toy-like art style is not matching.
